Nicole Bradick has been at the forefront of legal tech innovation for years, founding and leading multiple companies, including Theory and Principle – now part of Factor Law as of February 2025. We spoke to Nicole about her journey from trial lawyer to legal tech leader, what excites her about joining Factor, and why legal teams can no longer ignore good design.”
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I started my career as a trial lawyer and then moved into the legal tech/legal innovation space, founding and running several companies. My third business, Theory and Principle, was just acquired by Factor Law. At T&P, we design and build custom software for the entire legal industry, including some of the most important, exciting and impactful law firms, legal tech companies, and legal aid organizations. When I’m not legal tech-ing, I love languages, couture, and karaoke.
What does joining Factor mean for your company, your team, and the work you do? What excites you most about this next chapter?
Joining Factor gives us access to a lot more resources, including their existing R&D team who have spent countless hours digging deep into building highly sophisticated AI solutions to solve legal problems. As a small business, we spent as much time as we could on R&D, but had to remain responsive to client demands and projects so we didn’t have the capacity to dive as deep as we wanted on some of the opportunities AI has created. Combining our product expertise with their deep domain expertise and R&D is going to make for some very meaningful solutions, which is very exciting for us. So with Factor, we have a home where we can keep serving our clients as we were, but get to expand into doing some more sophisticated AI work and longer term internal projects. We also are able to move more into the in-house market as well.
If you could give one piece of advice to legal teams looking to improve their use of design, what would it be?
Honestly, I think the days of building products without the help of a designer are past us. I think you maybe could have gotten away with it 5 years ago in the name of just trying to get functionality out the door, but now it’s imperative to have a designer on board, even if just on a contract basis. Whether you’re building things for clients, lawyers, or the public, people are extremely busy and touch dozens of digital products in a typical day. If you want them to spend time in the one you’re building, the user experience needs to be well thought out and meet at least basic visual standards in order to build trust. So, that’s my advice: Don’t rely on your devs or your project team to “design.” Get an actual designer.
